The MLB Season’s long 162 game schedule presents many injuries along the way for all 30 teams around the game. For Fantasy owners, though they don’t have a minor league system filled from A ball up to triple A with new talent. This is where great fantasy owners separate themselves from the good owners in most leagues.
Most of the time when you get the news of an injury, it isn’t good news, but it may be positive for another owner or the team that picks up the stud minor leaguer who comes up and shows he is ready to play. The season is approaching the half way point and some key players are on the injury report.
Here is the good and bad to expect from key players injured around MLB:
Matt Wieters, Baltimore Orioles: Fantasy owners of Wieters received the worst news possible yesterday with the announcement of season ending elbow surgery. Wieters was having the best season of his career and looked to be the fantasy catcher option that most teams were looking for.
Jose Altuve, Houston Astros: The Astros second baseman avoided the disabled list, but has only pinched hit since leaving the game on June 12. Altuve currently leads all of the majors with 90 hits despite missing nearly three full games.
R.A. Dickey, Toronto Blue Jays: Dickey, who left the game late against the Baltimore Orioles with an apparent groin injury is expected to make his next start for the team.
Mark Trumbo, Arizona Diamondbacks: Trumbo started taking batting practice the first week of June. This news should come as a relief to fantasy owners and he is expected to be back in early July.
Brandon Belt, San Francisco Giants: The Giants first baseman broke his thumb and expected to miss the next couple weeks. He has been working both during infield drills as well as taking two handed swings.
CC Sabathia, New York Yankees: Sabathia has been dealing with a knee injury for most of the 2014 MLB Season. The Yankees starter has recently started throwing off flat ground, but isn’t expected to return to the rotation till at least July.
Joel Hanrahan, Detroit Tigers: The Tigers signed the former closer this off-season to provide depth in the bullpen. Hanrahan is recovering from Tommy John surgery and has reported no pain in his throwing process. The Tigers could get him back in early July depending on how the throwing program continues.
Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies: Cargo is one of many key contributors from the Rockies on the disabled list. The other key stars are Nolan Arenado, Michael Cuddyer and Jorge De La Rosa. Gonzalez had a tumor removed from one ofhis fingers and is recovering well. Look for a return somtime in mid to late July.
