10 players to stay away from in fantasy week #1
Fanduel’s Sunday Million
Tony Romo, Philip Rivers start the 2014 NFL season with a difficult fantasy matchup. The Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback is set to make his first full start since recovering from back surgery that caused him to miss the team’s last game of the 2013 NFL season.
The twelfth year veteran took some plays during the preseason but nothing like he will face when he squares off against the San Francisco 49ers. Romo and the entire Cowboys offense could be in for a long day against one of the NFL’s top defenses.
Typically Romo would be on our start list against almost any defense but not knowing how he will handle being hit we would pass on him in week 1. Last season Romo threw for over 300 yards in four games and finished with at least two touchdowns in ten games.
The other fantasy matchup that stands out is Philip Rivers going against the Arizona Cardinals defense. Last season Rivers put together one of the best seasons of his career thrown for 4,478 yards, 32 touchdowns and completed nearly seventy percent of his passes.
The key concern heading into this game is how will the veteran play without offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. The Cardinals are also a very good defense with one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL in Patrick Peterson.
These are just two of the fantasy matchups to stay away from. Here are the top 10 fantasy players to stay away from in week one of the 2014 NFL season.
1. Tony Romo, Quarterback: Romo is a fantasy quarterback but the uncertainty of his back has us worried. If it wasn’t for this the Cowboys quarterback could have plenty of opportunities on offense as the Cowboys defense will struggle to slow down opponents.
2. Philip Rivers, Quarterback: Has Philip Rivers really figured out how to be a consistent quarterback? Guess we will see on Monday Night Football against a solid Arizona Cardinals defense.
3. Jordy Nelson, Wide Receiver: Nelson received the big paycheck this off-season but will the Green Bay Packers star wide out show up against Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks defense? The entire Packers offensive team will be hard to pick in this game.
4. Mike Wallace, Wide Receiver: The Miami Dolphins host the New England Patriots to start the season. We expect the Patriots to slot Darrelle Revis against the team’s number one wide out Mike Wallace. We suggest staying away from him but you could turn your attention to Jarvis Landry as a sleeper.
5. Doug Martin, Running Back: All signs point to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers using a split back committee to open the regular season against the Carolina Panthers. It could be a long day for Martin against the second best run defense in 2013.
6. Atlanta Falcons Defense: The Falcons defense will have their hands full in week one against Drew Brees and the New Orleans offense. The Saints offense has a ton of weapons including Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston and a new weapon in Brandin Cooks.
7. Baltimore Ravens Defense: The team has to many concerns in the secondary as Jimmy Smith, Lardarius Webb and Asa Jackson all have missed time this season. The three cornerbacks are expected to play against one of the NFL’s top wide receivers in A.J. Green.
8. Buffalo Bills Defense: The loss of Jairus Byrd could show up in week one as the team takes on the Chicago Bears. The Bears have one of the NFL’s top wide receiver tandems in Alshon Jeffery’s and Brandon Marshall.
9. Alfred Morris, Running Back: The off-season buzz has been about how bad the Houston Texans team has looked. We suggest staying away from Morris in this matchup against a very talent filled defense that includes J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing.
10. Geno Smith, Quarterback: Smith has the opportunity to have a break out fantasy season but so does the Oakland Raiders defense. The New York Jets lack talent opposite of Eric Decker at the wide receiver position. If Jace Amaro can emerge as a breakout rookie at tight end Smith might surprise some people.
Top 10 Fantasy Football Plays for week #1
LeSean McCoy, Colin Kaepernick both set for a big week one fantasy performance in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles will travel to take on one the NFL’s bottom ranked rushing defenses from 2013 in the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before everyone jumps on the, “it’s a new season” argument take a look at the Jaguars off-season moves. The team added defensive end Red Bryant and defensive tackle Ziggy Hood with their main attention in the draft at the offensive positions.
The matchup alone makes LeSean McCoy one of the top 10 fantasy players to use week one of the 2014 NFL season. Then you have the fast paced offense Chip Kelly likes to run going up against the same defense. Last season McCoy topped the 100 yard mark seven times along with six games with at least one rushing touchdown. The third advantage for McCoy is the Eagles host the Jaguars in Philadelphia.
The other top fantasy matchup includes Colin Kaepernick leading the San Francisco 49ers against a Dallas Cowboys team that could be one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Last season the Cowboys allowed the most yards per game, third most passing yards per game and sixth most rushing yards per game. Now that same team will be without Sean Lee who is out for the season as well as Jason Hatcher and DeMarcus Ware who left in free agency.
Here is the complete top 10 list of fantasy players for week one.
1. LeSean McCoy, Running Back: McCoy is a must start for any league including daily leagues against a Jaguars team that could struggle on both sides of the ball.
2. Colin Kaepernick, Quarterback: The 49ers quarterback has a terrific matchup on paper against a Cowboys defense that will struggle in 2014.
3. Matt Forte, Running Back: Forte has been one of the most consistent fantasy running backs since entering the NFL. This week he gets a shot at a Buffalo Bills defense that had its fair share of stopping the run last season and failed to land additional talent to the defensive line.
4. Peyton Manning, Quarterback: The NFL leader in passing yards and touchdowns gets another crack at his former team the Indianapolis Colts. Last season Manning threw for 386 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a loss at Indianapolis.
5. Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver: Jeffery has a favorable matchup against the Buffalo Bills in week one. Last year Jeffery pulled in 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns.
6. Drew Brees, Quarterback: Brees and the New Orleans Saints will head to take on NFC South rivals the Atlanta Falcons. Last season Brees threw for 635 yards with four touchdowns and one interceptions against the Falcons secondary.
7. Minnesota Vikings Defense/Special Teams: The Vikings head to St. Louis to take on the Rams with Shaun Hill replacing the injured Sam Bradford. Hill has only attempted 1 5 passes over the past three seasons. The added bonus is having Cordarrelle Patterson back deep returning kicks.
8. A.J. Green, Wide Receiver: The uncertainty in the Baltimore Ravens secondary has both Green and teammate Marvin Jones as possible big game threats. The Ravens starting cornerbacks Jimmy Smith, Lardarius Webb and Asa Jackson all missed time this preseason.
9. Marvin Jones, Wide Receiver: The Bengals will test the secondary of the Baltimore Ravens often and early in week one as three of the teams primary members have missed time.
10. Jimmy Graham, Tight End: Graham and the Saints head to take on the Falcons in week one of the 2014 NFL season. Last season the Falcons were one of four teams to allow double digit touchdowns to tight ends.
Top 10 Fantasy NFL Running Backs
LeSean McCoy looks to repeat 2013 success as the top fantasy running back. McCoy and the Philadelphia Eagles are expected by many experts to be one of the top fantasy offenses with Chip Kelly calling the plays.
Last season the Eagles finished in the top five in rushing attempts (4th), rushing yards (1st), rushing touchdowns (2nd) and yards per carry (1st). Despite the Eagles bringing in a few running backs this off-season including Darren Sproles we see McCoy getting plenty of touches to produce high quality fantasy numbers.
McCoy has some solid competition as the NFL’s top running back that also includes Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte and Adrian Peterson. Here are the top 10 fantasy running backs entering the 2014 NFL season.
Top 10 Fantasy Running Backs:
LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles: Last season McCoy put together one of the best seasons of his career rushing for 1,607 yards on 314 carries. Each of those were career highs for the sixth year running back.
Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs: Charles benefits from having Andy Reid as his coach and it showed last season as he posted his career high in receptions with 70, rushing touchdowns with 12 and receiving touchdowns at seven.
Matt Forte, Chicago Bears: The Bears running back has been one of the most consistent running backs since entering the league in 2008. Forte has caught at least 44 passes and rushed for over 900 yards in all six NFL seasons.
Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings: Only thing holding back Peterson from the top spot is his lack of involvement in the passing game. We all expect Peterson to be a top five back in regards to yards but has only pulled in 40 or more catches twice in his seven year career.
Montee Ball, Denver Broncos: The Broncos running back should get an increase workload in 2014 as the teams starting running back. Ball will also benefit from playing in one of the NFL’s top fantasy offenses under Peyton Manning.
Alfred Morris, Washington Redskins: The third year running back should see another season with at least 1,200 plus yards and 7-10 touchdowns. Much like Peterson, if Morris was more involved in the passing game he would be a much higher rated running back.
Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers: Lacy was the only rookie running back to top the 1,000 yard mark last season. The Packers running back should benefit from having a healthy Aaron Rodgers for all 16 games.
DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys: The expectations are that the Cowboys will run the ball a little more in 2014 with Tony Romo coming off back surgery. This should increase Murray’s yards and touchdowns.
Reggie Bush, Detroit Lions: Bush won’t top the list in regards to rushing yards but the dual threat running back will be involved in both the rushing and passing attack in Detroit.
Chris Johnson, New York Jets: Rex Ryan loves to run the football increasing Johnson’s fantasy value entering the 2014 NFL Season. Johnson has shown at times he can be one of the NFL’s top running backs.
