Top 5 Fantasy Hockey Centers as we enter the 2014-2015 NHL Season
Besides goaltender, center is the most important position in fantasy hockey, which makes sense as it’s probably the second-most important position on the real-life ice as well. The top four scorers last season were all centers, and it looks like an especially deep position this season. After the top few, truly elite players, there might be 15 or 20 guys who can be counted on for at least 65 points over the course of 2014-15. With opening day rapidly approaching, here’s a glance at the top five fantasy hockey centers.
5. Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim
Maybe a slight reach at number 5, but the Ducks’ center scored 31 goals last season and 87 points total. Some might say that his 2013-14 campaign was a surprise after a few down years, but Getzlaf scored 91 points in 2008-09. With the addition of Dany Heatley at LW, Getzlaf might see his goals dip, but he should more than make up for it with assists. If you don’t like Getzlaf, consider Anze Kopitar of the Kings or Tyler Sequin in Dallas. Both are potential big number guys in what is a very deep field of NHL centers.
4. John Tavares, New York Islanders
Tavares got hurt last year, tearing up his knee 59 games into the season. To that point though, he’d scored 66 points, including 24 goals. The Islanders’ center has not had quite the production to vault himself into the ranks of the elite, but he’s consistent, averaging right around one point per game since 2011-12. And, at only 23, he’s got upside that a lot of the older guys don’t have. Watch for his power play numbers get just a little better as he really comes into his own this season.
3. Claude Giroux, Philadelphia
The loss of Scott Hartnell will no doubt have an effect on the Flyers’ offense, but Giroux should get his numbers one way or another. He started slow and still managed 86 points last season. Watch for him to have an even higher output if the offense leans more heavily on him this year. The Flyers’ power play should be excellent, and Giroux knows how to quarterback it.
2. Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay
Stamkos was hurt not even halfway through last season, but that’s no reason to shy away from him. Since 2009-10, the Lightning center has averaged well-above one point per game every season. He’s not yet broken the 100-point barrier, but he’s almost as solid as it gets at a position where consistent production is key. And this may be the year he finally breaks 100; Tampa Bay is going to score a lot of points and may be the best team in the Atlantic Division.
1. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh
No surprise that Sid the Kid tops the top five. He’s coming off of a 36 goal, 104 point effort in 2013-14, and he’s probably the best player in the world right now. If he stays healthy, Crosby is all but certain to score 100 points again. He’s done it in every season of his career that he’s played at least 77 games. The Penguins have shuffled a few things, with a new head coach and new personnel, but Crosby is still the right choice if you’re picking first in the draft. Heads-up: The Penguins second-line center, Evgeni Malkin, might be a top ten pick too.
Austin Davis and Week 5 Fantasy Football Highlights
Austin Davis surprises, Peyton Manning dominates on Sunday for fantasy owners! Davis has taken over the starting quarterback duties in St. Louis and showed Sunday he has the ability to keep the job. Entering the 2014 NFL season Davis entered third on the depth chart behind both Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. Bradford reinjured his knee forcing him to miss the remainder of the season for the second straight season.
Davis was able to capitalize for fantasy owners on Sunday despite the Rams 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The second year quarterback did everything he was capable of throwing for 375 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. This marked the second straight game Davis threw for over 325 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile in Denver, Peyton Manning continued to show why he is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. The Broncos starter picked apart a solid Arizona Cardinals defense from the start to the finish including his fourth passing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Manning’s first touchdown pass of the game was number 500 of his career and was able to finish at 503.
Manning also connected on 31 of 47 passes for 479 yards to go with the four touchdown passes. Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and Julius Thomas all added big fantasy games for fantasy owners. Demaryius finished the game with a league high 226 yards on eight catches with two touchdowns. Sanders, was able to added seven catches for 101 and Julius Thomas added two touchdown grabs and 66 yards.
Arian Foster, Houston Texans: The Texans running back put together a huge game for his fantasy owners rushing for 157 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns. This was Fosters third game of the season he topped the 100 yard mark.
Matt Forte, Chicago Bears: The dual threat running back led the Bears in both rushing and receiving yards against the Carolina Panthers. Forte finished with 61 yards on the ground to go along with his 105 yards on 12 catches and a touchdown.
Brian Quick, St. Louis Rams: Quick has slowly emerged as Austin Davis top target and it showed on Sunday. The Rams receiver pulled in five catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns to keep the team in the ball game against the Eagles.
Golden Tate, Detroit Lions: The first year Lion has made a big impact early on as the team’s number one receiver Calvin Johnson is limited with an ankle injury. Tate finished the game with seven catches for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Branden Oliver, San Diego Chargers: The rookie running back put together his best game of the season as the team’s top running backs miss time with injuries. On Sunday, Oliver filled in after Donald Brown left with an injury and it paid off as he finished with 114 yards and one rushing touchdown. Oliver also added four catches for 68 yards and a touchdown in the passing game.

Week 5 Injury Report and impact on Fantasy League Owners
Calvin Johnson’s limited performance in week 4 has fantasy owners concerned with his health. The NFL top wide receiver and Detroit Lions premiere weapon on offense is battling an ankle injury that limited him during week 4 against the New York Jets. Johnson has missed back to back practices this week after only being targeted two times last week.
Now this isn’t the first time in his career fantasy owners have seen him on the injury list as his name popped up weekly last year. That also included routine days off during the week to keep him healthy for all 16 games. Stay tuned over the next few days before electing to secure him in your starting roster.
Johnson is just one of a few key wide receivers that have landed on the injury list including Eric Decker of the Jets, Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons and DeSean Jackson with the Washington Redskins. The Jets wide receiver missed practice on Thursday with a hamstring injury. The other two participated in practice as Jackson was a full go while Jones was limited.
Here are some of the other key injuries that have direct impact on fantasy rosters.
Bernard Pierce, Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens running back was a full go on Wednesday and Thursday. Now this has more of an impact for fantasy owners that picked up Justin Forsett or are considering Lorenzo Talliaferro as a sleeper to win you big money on FanDuel’s Sunday Million and/or DraftKings‘ NFL $100K Play-Action.
Panthers Running Back Trio: The Carolina Panthers continue to have bad luck with their injuries as Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo WIlliams both missed practice week. The teams third running back Fozzy Whittaker has been limited as he deals with a thigh injury. This could open the door up for rookie running back Darrin Reaves in deeper fantasy leagues.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers tight end is slowly getting healthy after suffering an ankle injury making his fantasy value rise. Seferian-Jenkins has been limited in practice this week. If he is active he should make as a great cheap alternative at tight end as he emerges as a key go to guy in the red zone.
Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons third receiver did not practice on Thursday as he continues to deal with his ankle injury. Douglas missed the teams week four matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. If Douglass doesn’t play it could increase the production of Devin Hester in the receiving game.
Ben Tate, Cleveland Browns: The veteran running back is listed questionable heading into week 5. This doesn’t have direct fantasy impact on Tate but could take some touches from Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. Entering week 5, Tate has six carries compared to West’s team high 47 and Crowell’s 27.
Week 5 Top Fantasy Football Plays
The fantasy season rolls into week 5 as the quarterback position headline the top plays. The first two names that pop out are Philip Rivers for the San Diego Chargers and Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts. Each of these quarterbacks have great fantasy plays as Rivers takes on the New York Jets at home and Luck welcomes the Baltimore Ravens to Indianapolis.
Luck in the NFL leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns entering week 5. The third year quarterback has been one of the top fantasy passers each week throwing for over 370 yards in three games. The only game he wasn’t able to accomplish the feat was week 2 against the PhiladelphiaEagles but he was able to finish with three touchdown passes.
This week Luck will have his toughest task of the season against a solid front seven of the Baltimore Ravens that include Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata and Elvis Dumervil. If Luck can avoid the pressure and the offensive line blocks he should make plays against the Ravens bad secondary. The Ravens are without Lardarius Webb who is been out as he is dealing with a back injury.
For Rivers it marks his fourth start this season against a defense that ranks in the top seven in fewest yards allowed. All three of those performances he passed for a touchdown and at least 238 yards passing. In week 2, Rivers connected on 28 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns against a very good Seattle Seahawks team.
Here are some other top fantasy plays for week 5.
Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks: Wilson is still a week by week fantasy starter till the team asks him to throw the ball more. This week he will get his shot against a Washington Redskins team that allowed five total touchdowns to Eli Manning last week on Thursday Night Football.
Quad of Steelers, Pittsburgh Steelers: Instead of listing them one by one we elected to group them as one. The list includes Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and Heath Miller against a very bad Jacksonville Jaguars defense. The Jags enter this game allowing the the most fantasy points to quarterbacks, third most to running backs, second most to wide receivers and third most to tight ends. All of these players are great options as well as Markus Wheaton as a sleeper in FanDuel and DraftKing leagues.
Brandin Cooks, New Orleans Saints: Cooks gets his shot at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that has allowed a league high six touchdown receptions to wide receivers. The other part to consider is how well the Saints play at home especially quarterback Drew Brees.
Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals: The dual threat Bernard is a great fantasy play in week 5 against the New England Patriots. The Patriots have played well shutting down the run but they have struggled with running backs in the passing game allowing a league high four touchdown receptions.
Breakout Fantasy Football Stars Through Week 4
Draftday’s
Knile Davis, Austin Davis strong start earns them a spot on the fantasy break out team. Davis is in his second season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs has earned much of his playing time due to injuries to Jamaal Charles. This has led to three straight solid fantasy games for the second year running back.
The Chiefs running back was limited in week 1 with one carry for three yards and one catch for three yards. Since then the former Arkansas Razorback has rushed for over 300 yards in the past three games with three touchdowns. This includes his strong performance on Monday Night Football splitting carries with Charles.
Davis finished the night with 16 carries for 107 yards to go along with one catch for 12 yards. Despite not finding the end zone and the return of Charles, Davis is a great option in deep fantasy leagues as Andy Reid will look to keep Charles as healthy as possible for the entire season.
The other Davis having a break out fantasy season is Austin Davis for the St. Louis Rams despite not entering the season as the team’s backup quarterback. In week 1 both Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill left with injuries forcing Davis into the game.
Now Davis has a long way to go to take over as a full time starter for any fantasy team but he could be a viable fantasy option on Draftday and FanDuel. Davis enters week 5 costing $7,200 on Fanduel and the 20th overall fantasy quarterback.
Here are some of the other top fantasy breakout stars in 2014
Justin Forsett, Baltimore Ravens: The seventh year running back is 10th in the NFL in rushing yards with 255. Forsett has been very productive in four games despite getting 11 touches in game one, eight touches in game two, 11 touches in game three and 14 touches in game four. The first year Raven has also added at least three catches in all four games for fantasy owners in PPR leagues.
Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings: Asiata has emerged as the Vikings starting running back with Adrian Peterson out of the lineup. The third year running back out of Utah put together his best fantasy game of the season in week 4 with 78 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns. If Teddy Bridgewater stays healthy the Vikings offense could gain some steam the rest of the way.
Niles Paul, Washington Redskins: Paul entered the season as the third option at tight end behind Jordan Reed. Times have changed as Reed has only been activated for one game while Paul has had at least 60 yards receiving in each of the four Redskins games this season.
Larry Donnell, New York Giants: Donnell might have been the most picked up free agent on the waiver wire this week as he pulled in three touchdown grabs on Thursday Night football. The second year tight end has pulled in at least five passes in all four games making him a viable option in PPR leagues. If the Giants offense continues to roll he might become a full time starter for fantasy owners.
Chandler Catanzaro, Arizona Cardinals: Typically kickers don’t get much fantasy but this rookie has been outstanding for the Cardinals. On the season Catanzaro is nine for nine on field goals including one over 50 yards along.

Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire Moves
Mike Glennon
Week 5 will see only two teams on bye, and chances are your starting quarterback does not play for the Dolphins or Raiders, but if you’re looking at rough matchups, Glennon is a great plug and play. Glennon torched the Steelers for 302 yards and 2 scores leading the Bucs to their first win of the season. The Bucs visit the Saints this week, and the Saints secondary is currently ranked 27th against opposing quarterbacks. Glennon is owned in less than 1% of standard leagues.
Darrin Reaves
Reaves will get the backfield start for the Panthers in Week 5 against the Bears. Chicago does not give up a ton of yards on the ground, but with 15 touches last week, and Cam Newton continuing to look sore at times, the workload should be there for the undrafted rookie. Reaves was on the field for 46 snaps last week, but saw very little productivity. If you have Maurice Jones Drew or Lamar Miller on bye, Reaves is a decent addition for Week 5. Reaves is currently owned in less than 1% of Fantasy leagues.
Allen Robinson
In week 4 Robinson snagged 5 catches for 38 yards against San Diego, but with the Jaguars consistently playing from behind, and Robinson appearing to be one of Bortles favorite targets, we here at Rotoguys.com expect Robinson to be a solid flex play. Robinson has 17 catches for 192 yards, but those stats were all racked up over the last three weeks. The Jags play Pittsburgh who gave up 302 yards through the air to Tampa Bay. Robinson also makes a great waiver wire sub for Mike Wallace on bye, and is currently owned in less than 2% of standard leagues.
Miles Austin
The former Cowboy has become a top red zone target for Brian Hoyer, and he has found the end zone in two straight weeks. The Browns face the Titans this week, and a secondary giving up 225 yards per game through the air. Jordan Cameron being healthy should free up Austin for some decent targets. If you have Mike Wallace or James Jones with Week 5 bye weeks, Austin is a solid flex play against the Titans. Austin is owned in less than 4% of Fantasy leagues.
