FANTASY BASEBALL: POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR THE STATS YOUR TEAM IS LACKING

As fantasy baseball nuts we are always looking at numbers – we are extrapolating and making predictions based on historical data and it gets so bad that we see those numbers in our heads when we close our eyes at the end of the day. Congratulations, you’re human – but often we look at available players and trade options with specific positions in mind and at times don’t consider enough the stats that we need to target. For some reason we think we are in actual relationships with these players and we have so much invested in them that we become stubborn managers leaving stats on the table. We refuse to sit a guy because we don’t want to miss his breakout game. I get it, but refusing to have an open mind will kill you whether you are in a ROTO league or a head to head league. First identify the stats your roster has deficiencies in – target those stats – over position. You’ve got to let go of that pride, and make better use of your UTIL spot. Let’s examine some players that may help you meet some statistical needs versus positional needs and let’s get your roster more competitive and well rounded. I’m not going to get too much into ratio stats like avg. obp or ops as most leagues use only one or two of those stats and they are split up pretty evenly in league settings. Let’s take a look at offense as it requires significantly more strategy and pitching can be streamed for Ws and Ks.

HOMERUNS

Luis Valbuena, 2B – Houston Astros: Valbuena is 9^th in the majors in HRs and is only 24% owned, meaning he is likely available in your league. I hate the thought of chasing stats but Valbuena hit 16 bombs last year and there’s a good chance he’s better than the 2B you are playing right now. His 2B eligibility alone should have him owned in more leagues. The main reason why this power will stick is because he’s batting at the top of a great Astros line up in between Jose Altuve and George Springer. He is getting a lot of great pitches to hit and will easily hit 20 HRs this season. He offers no speed – but if you are struggling in power consider playing him at 2^nd or in your flex.

Kelly Johnson, 1B, 3B, OF – Atlanta: Johnson is another guy who has flashed 20 plus HR power in the past and has shown no reason why he won’t do it again. He has 6 bombs already so if your team needs to be super charged, give both these guys a shot in your line up, and enjoy watching yourself move up in the standings.

RBIs

David Freese, 3B – Los Angeles Angels: At only 17% owned Freese if healthy, should be a great source of RBIs for the rest of the season. The Angels have a great offense and they all get on base. Currently Freese is 2^nd in the majors in RBIs amongst 3Bs and my guessing is that you’re holding tight on the hot corner with players like Kyle Seager, Will Middlebrooks, Pablo Sandoval and Xander Bogaerts. If a lack of RBIs are weighing you down than Freese should be playing ahead of all of these guys.

HITS

Angel Pagan, OF – San Francisco: Only 30% owned Pagan is a five category contributor. He’s not going to kill it in any one stat but the guy is a beast when it comes to getting on base and is 5^th in the majors in hits. Hits is a grossly watered down stat but with a lot hits, comes a lot of counting and ratio stats. There’s a laundry list of players that are dragging down your roster that Pagan should be starting in front of and you know who they are.

RUNS

Andrelton Simmons, SS – Atlanta Braves: Only 24% owned Simmons will have more runs, Hrs, and RBIs than Adeiny Hechavarria of the Marlins who is currently the 2^nd ranked SS in the league. If its runs you are looking for swap out any SS not named Hanley Ramirez or Troy Tulowitski. He already leads all SS in runs, so ditch your current SS and enjoy the uptick.

STOLEN BASES

Billy Burns, OF – Oakland: The A’s have one of the best offenses in the league and Burns just stole his first base in just his 4^th game. He’s hitting almost .500 and has three straight multi-hit games. He takes his last name literally as well as he was a burner on the base paths swiping over 70 bags last season in the minors. If he gets regular playing time, he may steal 30 – but you will have to keep an eye on him.

Rajai Davis, OF – Detroit: The old faithful of SBs Davis is still available in 53% of leagues. If you need steals, put him in your line up and stop playing guys like Nick Markakis and Curtis Granderson.

Nori Aoki. OF – San Francisco: Back in the National League Aoki has been an on base champion for probably the best small ball team in the majors. With 6 SBs already and only 38% owned Aoki will contribute in speed and other counting stats. You’re locked into Desmond Jennings but why? If you’re set in HRs and RBIs I’d even play him ahead of Starling Marte or Yoenis Cespedes – but you’d have to really be set.

Remember gamers, you are not committed to these guys at all. Look at them as loaners necessary to super charge your line up and fill in the gaps while injured players get healthy and cold players heat up. There have been a ton of injuries this season, so you have to adjust and there’s a bunch of players under performing as well forcing you to be extra patient. In the meantime you’ve got to keep your roster moving and bench players that aren’t producing. There’s a fine line between finding adequate positions to fill and actual stat chasing. The goal is continue to dominate the stats you have a core competence in and grind it out to at least be competitive in the stats where your team is lacking. Good luck gamers!

FanDuel MLB Lineup for Wednesday May 6

The fantasy action continues at full steam on FanDuel for the Major League Baseball action. That being said you still have time to sign up and cash in on FanDuel NHL and NBA leagues the down side is the limited amount of options taking the court or ice on any given day.

That leaves us to look daily at the Major League Baseball action including tonight with a 12 game slate. Tonight’s action is limited in top tier starters with the top starter on the mound coming from Chicago as Chris Sale looks to lead his White Sox over the Detroit Tigers with Alfredo Simon on the mound.

As we looked at tonight’s lineup of games not one of the starters on the mound jumped out at us. Sale is going against one of the more dangerous lineups in the game makes him a difficult gamble. We tossed and turned on Alfredo Simon for the Tigers and Danny Duffy for the Kansas City Royals. The two sleeper options that could reward you are both Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez at just $6,900.

Like any day we try to break down based on past success against a pitcher as well as recent trends. That being said we noticed the other day one of our plays despite solid success against a pitcher got the night off. We suggest monitoring the MLB Lineups as they start to come in before the 7pm start time.

P – Alfredo Simon ($7,600): The Tigers starter is coming off his first rough outing of the season only going 4.1 innings. Prior to that start, Simon had posted four double digit fantasy performances in his first five starts. Simon benefits from playing with one of the top offenses in the game of baseball.

C – Mike Zunino ($2,300): We continue to like the Seattle Mariners catcher despite some early season struggles. Tonight he Zunino is four for 13 off of C.J. Wilson in his career with one home run and four runs driven in. Two other options are Brian McCann and Victor Martinez who both have had great success against the starter they are facing tonight. You would have to go cheaper at the outfield position possible replacing Mike Trout with Josh Reddick to save cap space.

First Base – Anthony Rizzo ($4,300): The options are endless at first base tonight including Miguel Cabrera, Mark Teixeira and even Adrian Gonzalez. The Cubs first baseman is currently riding a six game hitting streak with one double, one triple and a home run.

Second Base – Stephen Drew ($2,200): Looking for a FanDuel bargain isn’t easy in baseball but Drew could be that answer tonight. Drew has a base salary of $2,200 opening up some free cap space while having great success against Mark Buerhle in his career. Drew is eight for 19 in his career off the Toronto starter with three extra base hits.

Third Base – Adrian Beltre ($2,800): While it looks as father time is slowly starting to catch up with Beltre, the Texas Rangers third baseman still can produce with the top third baseman in the game. Beltre is batting .500 off of potential starter Samuel Deduno with two career home runs in 10 career at bats.

Short Stop – Andrelton Simmons ($2,600): The only short stop we really like today in action takes the field in the early action and that is Troy Tulowitzki. That being said Simmons is riding a five game hitting streak with two doubles, one triple, seven runs scored and two walks.

Outfielder – Brett Gardner ($3,700): The New York Yankees continue to play some good baseball opening up a few options tonight in their lineup including Brett Gardner. You could also consider Carlos Beltran as another great options with four career home runs off of Buehrle. That being said Gardner is hitting .375 off the Blue Jays starter with five extra base hits and four runs driven in.

Outfielder – Mike Trout ($5,300): When the salary works it never hurts to have one of the games best players in your lineup. Trout has cooled down of late but his ability to hit for power and potentially swipe a base makes him worth the play. If you don’t like Trout you could go cheaper at the position tonight to free up some extra cash for a player like Jose Altuve at second base.

Outfielder – Adam Jones ($4,000): Jones might not be hitting the home runs like a Nelson Cruz but he is quietly putting together an MVP season for the Baltimore Orioles. Jones has three multi hit games over his last 10 outings with five runs driven in and five runs scored.

FanDuel MLB Lineup for Monday May 4th

The MLB action is solid for fantasy baseball FanDuel owners on this first Monday of May to cash in on. In all 11 Major League Basaeball games are in action including a few of the top starters in the game. This includes both Clayton Kershaw and Felix Hernandez. Other top starters on the mound tonight include Madison Bumgarner, Jordan Zimmerman and Dallas Keuchel.

Since many fantasy owners are going to elect to go with one of the top two options this led us to wonder what other stars we could compliment them with in our lineup. We ended up going with Kershaw simply based on his matchup tonight. One name that stood out was Yadier Molina for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Despite a slow season Molina is a career .395 hitter off of Travis Wood making him a great option. The best part of using Molina is his starting salary of $2,200 frees up some extra cash for a few other players on our team. Other great Fanduel Bargain options include Stephen Drew and Grady Sizemore based on salary and success.

Here is our MLB FanDuel Lineup for Monday May 4^th, 2015.

P – Clayton Kershaw ($11,300): The debate could be made for either Kershaw or Felix Hernandez tonight to take the mound for our fantasy team. In the end we like the matchup Kershaw has facing off against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers rank near the bottom of Major League Baseball in nearly every offensive category.

C – Yadier Molina ($2,200): Once one of the games top hitting catchers, Molina continues to struggle during the 2015 campaign. That being said Molina is a .395 career hitter off of Travis wood with three home runs and 13 runs driven in.

First Base – Adrian Gonzalez ($4,300): Sticking with players who have had a proven track record against starters they are facing tonight landed us with the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman. Gonzalez is hitting .385 off of Kyle Lohse in 26 career at bats with two home runs.

Second Base – Stephen Drew ($2,200): We were in need of some FanDuel bargains as we landed with Stephen Drew of the New York Yankees. Drew despite struggling this season has six career hits off of R.A. Dickey with three of them going for extra base hits.

Third Base – Martin Prado ($3,100): The debate could be made for a few options tonight at third base including Prado and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Prado is hitting .400 off of Jordan Zimmermann with three extra base hits in 20 career at bats.

Short Stop – Didi Gregorius ($2,200): Gregorius lands on our list of FanDuel bargains tonight despite having a down start to his 2015 season. That being said he has a hit in eight of his last ten games and nine positive fantasy performances in that stretch.

Outfielder – Matt Holliday ($3,500): Looking for a solid option in the outfield landed us with Holliday as the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago Cubs. Holliday has hit Wood well in his career picking up 15 hits in 40 at bats with four home runs and nine runs driven in.

Outfielder – Grady Sizemore ($2,200): The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder looks as if he landed the everyday right field spot for the ball club. Add in his four hits in his last three games makes him a great option as a bargain to free up some salary.

Outfielder – George Springer ($3,900): Springer and the Houston Astros have been red hot of late making him one great option to start. The Astros outfielder has three home runs, eight runs driven in and four doubles over his last ten games. One other option is Carlos Gonzalez based on his success off of Josh Collmenter.

FanDuel MLB Lineup for Friday May 1st

The weekend is here as we all look to cash in on the Major League Baseball action on FanDuel. For us the weekend is the best time of the week to cash in on FanDuel with almost every team in action within the day. That is the case tonight as we have 14 games to build a winning lineup from.

As we start to look around at the potential fantasy plays tonight around Major League Baseball the one key name to watch is Max Scherzer for the Washington Nationals. Scherzer who was dealing with a thumb injury causing him to miss a start will take the mound tonight against the New York Mets.

Another key fantasy play tonight is Evan Longoria for the Tampa Bay Rays. Longoria has had a solid track record of production against the Baltimore Orioles. That includes this season in just three game, Longoria has thre hits in eight at bats with one double, one home run and four walks.

Here is our complete MLB FanDuel lineup for Friday May 1^st.

P – Jose Quintana ($7,600): While we like Scherzer’s success against the Mets lineup we are also afraid of how the thumb will hold up. That landed us with Quintana against a Minnesota Twins lineup that ranks at the bottom in nearly every offensive category.

C – Stephen Vogt ($3,100): We looked at every option at the catcher position starting with which ones were playing in a hitters ball park. That landed us with Vogt who has four home runs and will be playing in the friendly hitter park at Arlington.

First Base – Mark Reynolds ($2,200): Reynolds was a simple option to use at first base and opened up a ton of salary cap relief. The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder/first baseman has five career hits including three home runs off of A.J. Burnett in 13 at bats.

Second Base – Neil Walker ($3,000): Sticking with players who have had some success against opposing starters Walker is a great option. Walker has 10 career hits off of Lance Lynn in 31 career at bats with two home runs.

Third Base – Evan Longoria ($3,100): The Rays third baseman has hit the Orioles well in his career including Chris Tillman. Longoria has six career home runs and eight runs driven in off of Longoria in 36 career at bats.

Short Stop – Brandon Crawford ($2,500): Looking for productive fantasy options landed us with Crawford. The San Francisco Giants short stop has yielded a positive fantasy output in each of his last 10 games including five of those with at least three fantasy points.

Outfielder – Mark Trumbo ($3,600): Trumbo is riding a three game hitting streak going seven for 12 with two doubles, one triple and a home run. If the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder keeps swinging a hot bat like this he could be a nice play each night.

Outfielder – Nelson Cruz ($5,200): How can we not go with Cruz as he has responded in each contest this year the night after a negative fantasy production. Look for the home run leader to continue his production over the weekend in Houston.

Outfielder – George Springer ($3,900): After a some what slow start, Springer has started swing the bat well putting up at least eight fantasy points in three of his last six games. This weekend should be a fun series to watch between two lineups who can hit the ball out of the ballpark.
