The 2016 MLB fantasy baseball season is just around the corner as we start to look at the second base position. For us this might be one of those positions we wait to draft or use to find some salary cap relief. While Jose Altuve, Dee Gordon and Robinson Cano might stand atop the list but they don’t jump out to us as two players we would reach on to build our fantasy lineup around each night.

Below those three the second base position feature a solid list of options including players like Brian Dozier, Jason Kipnis and Ian Kinsler that sit just behind them as the top tier options. Below them you have players like DJ LeMahieu who gets to hit at Coors Field all season and Jonathan Schoop who gets to hit at Camden Yards.

Than you have a solid list of veterans that we suggest not forgetting about including Neil Walker for the New York Mets, Brandon Phillips for the Cincinnati Reds and Howie Kendrick for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Than you have some players who might be an interesting case including Starlin Castro if the New York Yankees elect to use him at second base, will Kolten Wong continue develop into one of the games brightest stars and Jace Peterson who showed potential despite hitting just .239 last season.

Top Fantasy Second Baseman Options in 2016:

Jose Altuve, Houston Astros: Altuve is entering the 2016 season riding back to back 200 plus hit seasons making him an easy option at second base. Along with the hits, Altuve managed to top the 40 double mark for the second straight season while setting a new career high with 15 home runs. Add in the fact he has stolen at least 33 bases in four straight seasons and it makes him hard to pass up on this season.

Brian Dozier, Minnesota Twins: When we looked at the top options at second base we gave the edge to Dozier over both Gordon and Cano. Despite posting just a .236 batting average last season, Dozier posted career highs in doubles (33), home runs (28), hits (148) and runs batted in (77). The Twins second baseman has continued to develop into one of the games best second baseman.

Second Baseman to avoid in 2016:

Logan Forsythe, Tampa Bay Rays: Coming off an impressive 17 home run season last year many fantasy owners may have the Rays second baseman higher on their list. For us injury concerns this spring along with his ability not to find a spot on the field including appearing in no more than 110 games prior to last seasons 153 games played would lead us to look else where.

Dee Gordon, Miami Marlins: While we expect Gordon to put up some solid seasons we suggest not drafting him to early as you can find some additional value later in your draft. Gordon has shown some injury concerns in the past as well as some struggles getting on base. That being said if you can get him after landing a few other key positions first than grab him up.

Breakout Candidates at Second Base in 2016:

Jonathan Schoop, Baltimore Orioles: Not sure if many would consider Schoop a breakout candidate but we just have him very high on our list of top second base options. Schoop managed to hit 17 doubles and 15 home runs while appearing in just 86 games. Add in the fact he gets to hit in one of the best hitters ball park for 81 home games increases his value .

Joe Panik, San Francisco Giants: We are riding the idea that Panik will stay healthy in 2016 and appear in upwards of 145 to 150 games for the club. Panik hit .312 last season with 27 doubles, eight home runs while driving in 37 runs in just 100 games played.
