Cam Newton’s lingering rib injury should have fantasy owner’s concerned heading into week 1. Newton is just one of a many names around the NFL that will enter week 1 on the injury list that could play or miss week 1 of the 2014 NFL season. This would be a devastating blow for fantasy owners as the Carolina Panthers travel to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Newton has racked up at least 3,800 yards of total offense and 27 combined touchdowns. Reports came out around the NFL that Newton did participate in team practice on Saturday with no setback. This looks good for fantasy owners heading into week 1.
Here are the top injuries that could affect fantasy owners week 1.
Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers: The Panthers quarterback has been battling a rib injury but coach Ron Rivera expects him to go at full effort on Sunday. Newton is expected to wear a flat jacket to help protect him on hits but will it affect his throwing? If you have another quarterback on the roster that has a better matchup you might want to start him.
Bernard Pierce, Baltimore Ravens: Pierce is set to start for the Baltimore Ravens at running back against the Cincinnati Bengals. The third year running back left the team’s third preseason game after sustaining a hit to the helmet that was diagnosed as a concussion. If you own Pierce we recommend leaving him on the bench against a tough Bengals defense.
Marvin Jones, Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals wide receiver is out against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. This could take away some of the single coverages that A.J. Green might have saw as the Ravens will try shut him down. The team’s third receiver Mohamed Sanu should be a great fantasy start as a third receiver or flex spot.
Emmanuel Sanders, Denver Broncos: The Broncos wide receiver is listed probable heading into the teams Sunday Night game against the Indianapolis Colts with a thigh injury. Fantasy owners should start Sanders but stay alert to the injury report prior to the game. Sanders should have a solid 2014 NFL season for fantasy owners.
Cecil Shorts III, Jacksonville Jaguars: Shorts will be out week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles with a hamstring injury. This injury could hurt fantasy owners in week 1 as we expect the Jaguars to put up some yards as well as a few scores. This news should make Marqise Lee a must start for any fantasy owner that owns him.
Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots: The very talented Patriots tight end is listed as questionable heading into Saturday night for Sunday’s matchup against the Dolphins. This is a tricky one for fantasy owners since Gronkowski is a top two tight end when healthy. We recommend waiting till the last minute to start Gronkowski after seeing an updated injury report.
Kenny Stills, New Orleans Saints: Stills is out against the Atlanta Falcons with a quadriceps injury. Stills might not be a devastating blow to fantasy owners unless you are in a deep league of 16 teams. This should also open the door for fantasy owners that were concerned with starting Brandin Coooks week 1.
Other notable players that are on the list include Odell Beckham Jr (Out), Lance Moore (Out), Keenan Allen (Probable), Antonio Gates (Questionable), and Michael Crabtree (Questionable).
