Strategies
There have been a lot of changes lately in the NBA with Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Memphis, and Boston making an array of transactions. Cleveland has been having a tough time being atop of the Eastern Conference and have traded away some pieces in order to bolster their lineup.
It was long rumored that the Cavaliers have been looking to add a legitimate big man to their team and they have done so by attaining the services of Timofey Mozgov. Mozgov has been able to produce well for the Denver Nuggets, but may actually be a better fit on Cleveland. With Kevin Love as their stretch four and having very little to show for defense, Mozgov should help provide a post presence as well as a rim protector. His production could go either way, but he wasn’t averaging the greatest numbers while in Denver.
He should be able to give you close to 10 points, 8 rebounds and a block while shooting a high percentage. Cleveland will be a tougher team to play against with their improvement in the front court.
Not only did they bolster their front court, but they have also made some strides with their guard play. They have also received the services of JR Smith and Iman Shumpert, which should add more offensive firepower and a lockdown defender. Smith has been known to be a tough player to manage and his shot selection is not the greatest. However, with playmakers in Love, Irving and James, Smith should see a wide range of open shots and easy transition buckets.
Smith should benefit greatly from this trade and probably could use a winning atmosphere to help him produce more. Smith is a high risk, high reward acquisition so if you need a sg/sf who can shoot 3’s then feel free to give Smith a look.
Shumpert is currently injured and it isn’t quite clear how many minutes he will be given. He does have the opportunity to steal the starting shooting guard position from Smith or Miller due to his ability to lockdown opposing players. His defense is definitely stifling and he can also shoot a modest percentage from deep. If you’re in need of 3’s, steals and blocks then Shumpert would be a better acquisition than Smith. However, you will have to take the wait and see approach as the Cavaliers have some toying around to do with their rotations.
While Smith and Shumpert got shifted to Cleveland, Dion Waiters has been moved to OKC. OKC has perennial superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook plus Serge Ibaka, which leaves many people to question whether or not Waiters can produce enough for you to pull the trigger. He will likely be in the same position as he was in Cleveland, but slightly different. In Cleveland, he didn’t have much chance to shoot with the big three of Love, Irving, and James taking the lion share of shots. In OKC however, they will want him to shoot more with the second unit.
Jackson and Waiters should become a great backcourt duo coming off the bench and could help improve OKC’s chances of making it into the playoffs. Waiters is known to be trigger happy and will give you a decent amount of points in fantasy leagues. He should be able to give you somewhere between 10-13 points per game, a few rebounds, a couple assists, a steal and perhaps 1.0 3-pointers so he does have some upside. If you’re in need of a shooting guard who could potentially give you modest numbers across the board, Waiters should be a good bet. However, like most recent acquisitions it is best to look at his numbers in the coming games to see what his performance may look like.
The NBA has been busy with trades and will become even more busy once it draws nearer towards the trade deadline. Stay tuned as the Rotoguys will keep you posted as changes occur.
