Week 1 of the 2014-15 NFL season is in the bag, and we saw very few surprises as far as actual outcomes are concerned. The Seahawks, Eagles, 49ers, and Broncos took care of business as expected, despite the comeback attempt from Andrew Luck and the Colts at Sports Authority Field in Denver.
Seattle looked dominant against the Packers Thursday night, and the 49ers jumped out early to overthrow the Cowboys. The Eagles game was shaping up as the biggest surprise, until the Eagles turned it on in the second half to soar past the Jags.
However, we did have some big surprises in the Fantasy Football world, and Rotoguys has the recap for you. This is our list of Week 1 Surprises and top waiver wire prospects.
Kelvin Benjamin-WR- Carolina- Benjamin was without Cam Newton throwing him the ball, but that didn’t seem to matter. Benjamin caught six passes for 92 yards and a score in the Panthers victory Sunday. Benjamin received a ton of heat from draft pundits for being unpolished, but after Week 1, he is guaranteed to be the hottest waiver wire prospect out there. Benjamin is currently owned in 37% of Fantasy leagues.
Allen Hurns-WR-Jacksonville– Hurns put up big numbers (4-110-2) against the Eagles this past Sunday, but he did benefit from the absence of Cecil Shorts in the Jags offense. Hurns will be at the top of many waiver wires this week, but we feel it’s worth holding out on picking him up right away. Hurns is currently owned in only 19% of leagues.
Larry Donnell-TE-NY Giants- Larry Donnell emerged as a legitimate target for Eli Manning Monday night. Donnell hauled in five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Giants embarrassing loss to Detroit. New York gets the Cardinals defense next week, which allowed Antonio Gates to rack up six catches and 81 yards Monday night. If you’re looking for a decent Tight End to play the matchups, you could do much worse than Donnell. Donnell is currently only owned in 1% of leagues.
Carlos Hyde-RB- San Francisco- Hyde looked outstanding Sunday against the Cowboys. He carried the ball seven times for 50 yards and a touchdown, and if you’re one of those savvy Fantasy owners, who snagged Hyde late in your draft, expect this to only be the beginning. The injury history of aging Frank Gore speaks for itself, and Hyde will surely be integrated more and more into this offense as the season progresses. If Gore misses anytime this season, you will have a new RB2 in your lineup. Hyde is owned in most leagues, but you have to get props for that hawk-eye of yours.
